The best way to know the horsepower need for a generator is to calculate it.

A generator at best is 80% efficent, so divide the generator"s max (or surge) power rating by .8 to find the power needed at the input. Now convert the watts into HP by dividing it by 746 (746 watts = 1HP).

This should tell you the smallest tractor that you should use with the unit, to prevent any damage to the generator or attached equipment.
