Schramm adapted all sorts of commonly available engines to compressor duty. Typically these they ran on half the engine's cylinders. The other half of the cylinders were fitted with special heads and manifolding to pump air. They are kind of weird-sounding machines, but are well engineered and long-lived. IHC engines probably were the most commonly used. But I've also seen Minneapolis Moline, Buda and Chevy inline engines, also Ford V8's (both flathead and OHV) and Wisconsin air cooled V4's in tow-behind Schramm compressors. The Schramm Pneumatractor was not particularly effective as a tractor (heavy, underpowered and a fuel hungry). However as a compressor it's ability to move itself around in rough terrain and to perform occasional tractor duties (eg. pulling other equimment, doing light blade work, etc) made it very attractive to roadway contractors, town highway departments, etc in the 50's and 60's. Many thousands were sold.
