Tim: Forget about width of cut, for a good disk, your going to require a minamum of 1.25 hp per 16" blade and depending on a number of factors that could run as high as 1.75 hp per blade. 18" or 20" blades will require more hp. Depth of cut and soil are unknown factors as well. Looking at it from this point of view, a 36 blade disk is plenty load for a Farmall M, SM, 400, etc. Sure it may well pull a 48 blade disk 3" deep, but what are you going to do if you wish to disk 6" deep. I know most of these guys will tell you, you'll never need to go 6" deep. However if you want smooth fields, it is ocasionally necessary.
