Your charging question: Once the tractor is running, put your multimeter test leads on the battery terminals. You should be charging more than six volts - if it's not, then your generator isn't making power and the tractor is running off the battery. This is how I diagnosed my dead generator. Off to the shop for rebuild, incl. new bearings!
