If your battery is in good shape, you will have no problems. We have a SMTA which was converted over 20 years ago, which still uses the stock ammeter, and have had no problems. When starting, leave the throttle at near idle until the ammeter starts to taper off on the charge. then you can advance the throttle to any position without trouble. When the charge rate doesn't taper off within a few minutes, it is usually a sign that the battery is getting weak, or that it has taken lots of cranking to start the engine[large battery draw].
