The original ammeter will work fine. Note however that if the new generator (or alternator) is rated for more than 20 amps output the ammeter will peg on the charge side after startup. But this won't hurt it. (I've had a 61 amp alternator pegging the stock ammeter on my Super M for nearly 30 years - it still works fine.)

And as janicholson points out, if you're switching to negative ground you'll need to swap the connections on the two ammeter terminals - otherwise it will read "backward".
