Not all SA's had waterpump, as I understand it, some did, some of the earlier ones did not. I wouldn't think a 42 inch deck would cause a SA to overheat, though. I would guess your Cub had some big flakes of rust obstructiing the free flow of coolant in the block, flushing several times should help. A thermosiphon is kind of finicky about obstructions as there is no pump to blast the coolant past them.
