M overhaul

I traded for what I believe is a 1948 M. A buddy of mine had it and was going to overhaul it.When he went to take out the #1 piston the sleeve crumbled and came out too.It has 3 7/8" flat pistons.Can I take out the sleeves and put Super M pistons back in it? If so is there anything else I have to change or replace? This will be my first overhaul project and the tractor will be used on the farm.I want plenty of horsepower without sacraficing dependability.Thanks.
