Jeff if "hard to start" meaning you starter is turning very slowly, check the brushes. They are probably well worn. Replace those first and see if she cranks better. Converting to 12 from 6 on these lettered series is fairly simple. Your cost will be 12 volt light bulbs, the battery, a resistor in the coil line so the coil is still getting 6 volts, a 12 volt generator and voltage regulator. I budget $200 for a conversion give or take.
