Way back in the early days of tractor pulling the tractor was hooked to a simple sled, or skid. As the puller progressed down the length of the track, folks who were standing along the sides would walk out and step onto the skid. Of course, each of these people had to weigh in first, so the officials would know how much weight had been pulled. The heavier weight classes required stacking cement blocks on the skid in addition to people stepping on. This is about as simple as it gets, and as you can imagine, careless folks did get hurt, and the pull was not always fair because the people did not always step onto the sled in the appropriate designated spot.
