A very common problem on the British rear end assemblies used in the 424 is water leaking past the draft control rod that mounts vertically ahead of the top link pivot. There is a seal around that rod but as the rod gets rusty, the seal wears out and rain water or melting snow can leak in and it goes directly to the transmssion/rear end oil, not the hydraulic oil. The simple solution we have come up over the years is to make a rubber flap from an old tube about 8" square and bolt it to the top of the hyd. housing and laying backwards over the top link pivot unit. That keeps the water out and solves the problem. Change the oil as suggested by the the other posts and you should be good to go. Don
