Vegetable farmers, such as my dad, actually bought narrow steel wheels and installed them when cultivating in narrow rows, back to tires for tillage. I spent many hours on one. Less compaction, used at least into the 60's, so they weren't used only because of the WWII rubber shortage. Pretty commonplace on IH, JD, Ford, Ferguson tractors of that era. IH steel was available for a long time.
