If you have good compression through the spark plug, that would seem to indicate that there is a problem with the "third" valve which is the decompression valve. You can pull the valve cover and check to see if it is stuck, or not set properly so that it is not closed when in diesel. If stuck, you can probably free it up with some penetrant and working the valve. If not, looks like you will have to pull the head to fix it.
