BAD LOOKIN POINTS

I have a farmall C that I converted to 12 volts it was my first tractor an knowing what I know now I would not have done it. the tractor ran an started fine but the coil would get pretty warm I did not put a ballist resister in could this be why the coil was hot? the tractor ran fine for about a year then it started running like it had no power it would start but no power. I just looked at the points an they have a dark blue color at the tips an dont look flat. if I put a resister in would this help? an where do I put it. thanks
