If you're saying something came apart as in snap/pop/rattle/bang/etc and motor died, you've got troubles and need to pull it apart. But I think you're saying that the engine dropped to idle one day and stays there no matter what you do with the hand throttle?

If so, first verify the basics (that the throttle connections have not come loose from the governor). Check that the governor input lever moves when you move the hand control (gov case is hanging off front of motor in front of the distribtor).

Assuming that is OK, you can check basic governor operation by going to the carb side of the motor and grabbing the rod going to the carb and try to rev the motor with it (push it forward/backward) and you should feel the governor fight you trying to take it back to idle.

Assuming that is also OK, then it's probably just the governor spring that broke. You can remove the controls at the input lever (just above the governor) and the carb rod (just above the generator) then you take the governor case off the front of the motor. I think it's held on by about 5 bolts. The spring will be sitting right there in the case.

The dealer still carries them (or did the last time I bought them) and they aren't gonna cost your first born ;) On the C or Super C the governor case can come off with the radiator still in place, just a little tight. Been awhile since I've had a 504 here, but would guess it has plenty of clearance up front. Might need to remove the white trim pannel.
