Another Farmall B question - seals

Hi guys, another question. The engine overhaul is complete on our Farmall B. I talked to the mechanic yesterday and he said it was finished. Found a broken ring on one of the pistons. When dad took it in, he specified that he wanted the two leaky seals replaced in the rear axle. (Under the center of the tractor, under PTO). The mechanic said he didn't fix them, because he thought he'd have up to 500-600 $'s in labor to replace them. I'm about at the end of my budget on the mechanical portion of this tractor. Can anyone tell me what's involved in replacing these and how much the seals cost, how much labor etc? Are these common to leak? I want to pick up the tractor and move onto the paint and tires soon, but want the mechanicals done first. Thoughts?
