Increasing the octane level in the gas does NOTHING to protect the valves and valve seats. Now I may be perpetuating another myth here, but as I understand it, the cure for this is to have "hardened" valve seats installed at the next valve job.

What octane does is help prevent preignition in high-compression engines.
