Looking at the back of the alternator the terminal on the left,which should be marked R1 is the exciter terminal. I am not sure where it gets power from but it must be hot at some point to excite the field in the Delcotron alternator to make it charge. It does`nt have to be contstant because once the alternator is charging the voltage to that terminal can be shut off. The terminal on the right is the output and should have charging voltage of 13-15 volts. No juice to the left terminal means no output. That is what the dash light in older GM and some Ford vehicles did. If that bulb blew the circut was broke and you could change alternators all day long and they would never charge.
