This can be a very challenging task. The gears in my SMTA were worn so I could not decide if the noise was coming from the wear pattern or the backlash adjustment. After trial and error, I set the tolerance at 30 thousands and got rid of most of the rear end noise. The manual recommends a closer setting. Good luck.
