The problem with this shifting mechanism is too much linkage. Depending on serial # and what may have been repalced before there are two places where the linkage can slip out of synch. One is on the very bottom of the verticle shaft coming down from the shifters, that arm is keyed with a slot in the arm and a 5/16 bolt holds it tight, it may have slipped and the transmission is not going all the way into high. Put it back in synch and tighten or weld, it is cast.
The same goes for the arm on the shaft going through the cover, even the newer welded ones brake loose. This problem is almost never due to the gears themselves.
