Rex, sounds like you may have an air leak counter acting the choke. Check the tube from the air cleaner to the carburetor, the screws that hold the carburetor bowel to the body of the carburetor, the bolts that hold the carburetor to the manifold and the bolts/nuts that hold the manifold to the engine. Also could be a bad gasket at any of these points and or a cracked carburetor or manifold. The magnito is supposed to "clank" at slow speeds, like during start up. That is the impulse mechanism which gives a hot spark even if the magnito is turning at a slow speed. I can actually idle my BN down slow enough to hear it while running. Dave
