Paul: That soil is actually quite heavy clay, all systematically tile drained. Spacing on it must be close to 30'. It seems to be working well with no till. I know the clay around here had much better crops this summer than the sandy loams down near Lake Erie. This clay carries traffic very well even when wet, and it holds moisture well during a dry season. They also grow some very good crops of alfalfa, quite unusual for clay where I came from. In Nova Scotia we had to keep our alfalfa on sandy loams or it would winterkill badly. My farm was actually 1,300 miles away on the east coast in Nova Scotia. I moved here to see all this nice farmland you folks within 500 miles of the Great Lakes farm on. In the process I intend to see some of your old tractors and meet a few of you as well. I had visited Ontario numerous times in the past. Living here for the past 4 years has given me a new perspective. You really don't know an area until you've lived out the 4 seasons there. You see what a poor investment that one week trip was.
