The special tool the tractor vet mentioned is one part is used to push down on the reverse shaft as you lift the cover so that the half moon key don't fall out from down below. That ain't the biggest deal in the process but I'm sure you don't want to monkey with the fuel tank just to get to the side cover. When it goes back together you need the second part of the tool kit to hold the detent arms and spring in place as you put the cover back on. This part is probobly impossible without the tool. Don't fret if you see that you need a fork or rail, just remove the retaining clip on the rail and slide it back to replace the fork and the rail can be installed from the hole behind the top link cover with a long reach. Also rebuild the shift cover as long as its off because it probobly needs to be done anyway.
