The "Super" versions were upgrades...with larger engines, more horsepower and other new features. The Super M, for example, came along in 1953, while the regular M had been around since, I think, 1939 or 40. The Super M had a 264CID engine; the M's engine was smaller. There are several books out there that detail this development very nicely. Plus, many of the guys on this board can be more specific than I can off the top of my head.
