C123 without water pump

A friend put a C123 engine in a C, but he didn't put the water pump on it, now it runs hot just driving down the driveway. I asked him did he leave the thermostat on it, he said no. Did the C's have pressure caps on the radiator? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Kevin
