Also, positive or negative ground doesn't matter to lights. You obviously had to do some re-wiring to add the alternator. It's possible that you didn't reconnect the light switch power when you removed the regulator. You could have also broken the wire while rewiring. First, replace the sealed beams with 12V lights. Otherwise, they'll just blow out if they haven't already. Take the panel off the oval electrical box on the steering post. A wire should run from the light switch to the fuse holder, then from the fuse holder to a constant power source, like the battery side of the ignition switch or a dedicated wire running straight to the switch on the starter.
