Tim: I'm a poor one to ask on that particular setup. My letter series Farmalls had belly pumps, thus the only tractor I ever had with that pump and distributor was the Farmall 300. I replaced that pump once in the 35 years I had the 300, no problems with the drive for either pump or distributor. It's now been at least 30 years since I had that apart. My first thoughts when you say the hydraulic pump locked up is someone let the hydraulic system run dry of oil. Many folks think, oh I'm not using the hydraulics so not to worry about the fluid level. Problem is that hydraulic fluid or oil also lubricates the pump. A hydraulic pump without oil is no different than an engine crankcase without oil, somethings going to seize up.
