That�s not good! Sounds like either the switch is wired up wrong or (long shot possibly) the 4 position switch has gone bad.

Has your tractor�s original wiring been modified? I.e. has the original cutout relay been replaced with a voltage regulator, or has a 12 volt conversion been done? If so there should be no wiring connected to the field resistor. Only with the original cutout setup is a connection made to the field resistor.
