With a point gap of .020, and slop of .020, there is little doubt what is (in my opinion) wrong. I would have the distributor rebushed, and run an electronic ignition. As the speed increases the centrifugal advance probably centers the shaft and things are withing operational acceptability. threre is no way the timing can be even close with that much cam angle variation. Some cylinders will be ok, but others will be way off (as much as 20-30 degrees. That is a great way to hole pistons. Good luck on the repair. The shaft should be no more than .0015" of movement up/down in/out. JimN
