I know this probably isn't your problem, but I had a noise that I thought was in the gears. I could feel the knock in the steering wheel and I thought from the lower unit. It only knocked when in gear and moving. My husband checked the wheel bolts on all and found one in front was loose. I could not believe that was the problem. Good luck.
