I know of no view windows in the proximity of the starter on the 51 M but there is a little hole or port with a swing away cover that opens into the torque tube cavity allowing you to grease the throw-out bearing. I’m guessing that what you found was old grease either dropped from the head of the grease gun or slung out of the bearing lying on top of the liftall pump. The check for the fluid level is in front of the belt pulley housing on the opposite side of the tractor. It has a cap that looks like a knob on top of a pipe and there is a dip stick under that cap. The transmission level check is a pipe plug on the clutch side of the rear end housing in front of the clutch about the same level as the rod between the clutch petal and the shaft that goes into the torque tube. You have the correct level of lubricant in the rear end when it dribbles out of this hole.
