I like to use your philosophy too. I get the grass cut as short as I can before they fall, and let the wind do most of it.
Been outside today? I had to fetch a few things from against the back fence this morning!!
What's left in the spring I touch up with the rake. And raking through the grass that time of year seems to give it a good rejuvenation.

I thought I remembered last year of someone posting a pic of their home-made vac mounted on a trailer...
