Before things became standard they went both ways, I believe Ford n Chrysler went with Pos while GM went Negative. Things I have read indicated they thought Pos produced less galvanic action and corrossion where frame members met plus the points pitted less and theres the thing about on spark plugs how its easier to emit electrons from a relative hotter (electrode) to a relatively colder (ground strap). The genny will work either way if polarized while there can be an issue on the VR if its not suitable for either ground. They just hadnt decided on any standard yet is why one sees pos and neg in the early days. John T
