In addition to the three o-rings you disturb during disassembly, to stop the leak you replace the detent piston and it"s o-ring. Reason for this is because the o-ring is very difficult to install onto the piston without wrecking it, so Case-IH sells the piston and o-ring as an assembly. You can save a couple $ and try relacing just the o-ring, but you"ll be back in there again soon. No, this does not have anything to do with lifting power. When you"ve got the lever latched in either the forward or rear position, the detent piston is what unlatches the detent and causes the lever to return to the middle position when the pressure you"ve got it adjusted for is reached. I would use a 5000 psi guage to be safe, depending on what"s been done to it, a 656 could develop 2500 psi easy.
