That's exactly what I found in the pan on one of mine: A 1" thick layer of gunk about the consitency of window putty. Also the pump pickup float had sunk into the sludge blocking most of the oil inlet screen.

I cleaned the sludge out and fixed the float. Tractor has now run flawlessly on detergent oil for 7+ years now.
