Firecraters are stepped head pistons, but they are not like "normal" stepped pistons. My '57 230 has Firecraters. Looking thru the spark plug hole, they have a depression in the center of the step, hence "...crater". IH had three different types of altitude engines back then. Sealevel had the "flats", then they had a 4000 foot and an 8000 foot engine. Only guessing but as we know that the higher altitude you go the less power a normally aspirated engine has (lack of oxygen). The high altitude engines were to compensate for the standard sealevel HP. Not sure which one I have but it dyno'd at 32HP, whereas the standard 230 was rated at about 28HP. Matter of fact I plowed the garden with the FastHitch C20 on the 230 this morning (found NOS Plow Chief points for the C20). Good sharp plow points really do make a difference!
