If the plugs are wired so that #4 seems to be first, you may have had the engine 180from the real #1 when you looked at it. It will not run with the timing and wiring 180 out so it is more than likely ok. The following might help when looking at the wires. Make sure you are on compression with #1 by turning ignition off, and pulling #1 sparkplug. Then, with a short piece of garden hose stuck in the spark plug hole (not all the way into the chamber), rotate the engine with the crank till air blows out of the hose. Then align the marks, and look at the rotor. Otherwise it could be 180 degrees off.
