Super C - taking steering mechanism apart?

OK, I have the vertical steering shaft with worm
wheel assembly out of the front housing and
have removed the through bolt, but how do I
get the shaft out of the assembly? Shouldn't I
be able to support the lower bearing cover and
press/beat the shaft down through the
assembly? It sure is tight! Will this removal
method damage the lower bearing?
