Your short when the lights are connected could be a bad "fiber board" which acts as a small terminal strip where the lights are split from the switch supply. The fiber board on my W4 crumbled when i touched it. Located at the front of the tractor just under where the hood and grill seem is...one wire comes up from the switch and two wires go out to the headlights. Just replaced it with some masonite i cut from scrap.
