51' Cub, tranny noise...

I've got a 51' Cub...about 2 months ago, I developed a noise in 1st gear, I took it all apart, replaced bearings, put it back together & it's been quiet...until today....we are coming into winter, I don't need the tractor till spring, there is a local shop who will fix it for me, but, he is unwilling (or unable) to give me an estimate (he says it'll be $65/hr + parts)...what should this repair cost? I was hoping he would say $300 - $500, if it's going to be more than that, I was going to put my Chevelle out in the barn & pull the cub into the heater garage & take another stab at it...any ideas on pricing to fix it?
