"gummed up,slightly gelled and blackish" suggests it is time to pull the Touch-Control unit apart to clean thoroughly and replace all the o-rings. Not as bad as it sounds, but it will take some time. Just keep everything super clean. Use only hydraulic fluid to lube things as it goes back together.
