Are you sure the coil isn't somehow being grounded? What do you mean the original coil has been by-passed? Is this a mag or a distributor. The coil on a mag has to installed internally in the mag so the magnets within the mag will create a hot spark. Are the points set correctly? This somehow sounds like a battery ignition with a distributor using an automotive type coil. Hal PS: New coils are available for mags and distributors.
