You can cut the spokes and weld on a drop center rim, and that will work nicely, but it will not fool the experts, since the original rim has a raised section for each spoke, where the spoke was attached to the rim, to give the peened down end of the spoke a place to be below the circumference of the rim. (maybe to prevent chaffing on the tube) It will look great to most folks, and is sure a lot cheaper than trying to find good originals.
