My 454 gas did this to me when I first got it, had to run with the choke on for it to work. After two rebuild kits and a trip to the dealer they found a small piece of dirt in the carb and replaced the ventury. Did they soak the carb in cleaner over night to get all the dirt out, or just do a quick rebuild? I don't know why they replaced the ventury but it's worked better ever since. Still runs a little rich but It probably just needs adjusting.
