I think you may have sheared the cam gear key,(by dead heading the pump) throwing the cam timing off. Some of the later 400's and 450's with the live hydraulics had a problem with the nut holding the cam gear on would work loose and wear the key way out. I believe they went to a left hand thread on the later camshafts to prevent this nut from working lose. I believe the only way you are going to know is pull the front timing cover off and check that key and key way.
