polarizing?

I saw on a thread recently where the generator/voltage regulator has to be polarized because the VR points would pit otherwise. Had never heard of polarizing before and wonder what causes the points to pit if it isn't polarized. Electrical stuff is pretty tough for me to figure out, but seems like a metal set of points wouldn't know if the juice was flowing one way or the other when they close. And, guess I have a hard time seeing how giving them a heads up by polarizing the system before you start is going to make any difference. If someone could shed some light on this mystery, would appreciate it.
