clutch problem or shifter

I have farmall 300 row crop and I was moving some dirt with the loader, I stopped to back up and when I let the clutch out I was in 5th gear.I thought I had lost the clutch, I took the shifter out and I put it back in and i also readjusted the clutch rod ,it worked but why did it do what it did. Is the shifter shot,or is the clutch ready to go, after it worked as before.
