Don't rule out that ampmeter gauge just yet either. I've had to replace two of those my lifetime. One quit and never started until I replaced it. The other one would work sometimes, and the sometimes one was in my 1963 Farmall 140. I can say the sometimes was not related to tractor being hot or cold. It was completely random.

I still say go to coil first, we old hands that have had tractors for 45+ years have experienced this a few more times than once.
