The fixed axle solution will double the speed of the remaining axle, and reduce the total torque available. Welding the spiders is ok if you use ni-rod or some compatible process. Simple 6013 rod may cause cracking and resulting weld failure. The gears are not plain steel. This might not be an issue if the intended use requires little power transfer. Have a good welder do the job.
(I do not know, but pullers might have Ideas on the best process, or a part to replace the spider)
