Question on the Farmall B

I've been shopping these around all over lower Michigan and vicinity and I passed on one a couple of months back because it had a pretty good hole in the bell housing. This turned out to be a wrong choice, I guess, because at the tractor show yesterday I was looking at the show tractors and most of the B's and a few A's had the same hole. Can anybody fill me in on why it is there and don't it fill up with hornets?
